SPEEEEEEED!!!!!!

What a day, yet again glorious sunshine and a howling wind, so once again it was off to the estuary with my wave board and little sails. I rigged my 4.5m but as I was doing so noticed a 10cm long hole in one of the panels about half way up towards the luff tube... I whacked on some tape and decided to use it anyway as it was looking super choppy out there so I thought I wouldn't be going for any speed runs so a slightly inefficient sail wouldn't matter.

I was right, it was choppy but good fun blasting about and chop hopping in the sunshine. As the tide started to drop the wind seemed to fill in even more with some 40 knot gusts that had me gritting my teeth and hanging on as best I could. Top speed up to this point was 29.7 knots, but as the sand bank became exposed the chop eased a little and soon the 30 knot barrier was broken with a 30.2 knot run. I came in for a rest then, put on some more outhaul as the wind was still howling and then got back out there... This time the first run was 31.1 knots, then 31.4 knots. As the water flattened off the speeds increased 32.8 knots was the next big one then 33.1 knots and this was followed by one of my best crashes ever.. Flat out at 33 knots and something (I'm not sure what) happened... I hit the water hard, spun around on my back with my arms and legs flailing for a while then one of my limbs caught in the water and pulled me under, really deep until I hit the sand... Nice!!

Following this I had loads of runs over 33 knots, 33.1 knots seemed to be the maximum for a while, then it crept up to 33.2, then 33.4 and eventually my last two runs before I got off the water were 33.7 and 33.8 knots respectively... Maybe if I had stayed out I would have broken 34 knots but I had had just about as much as I could take by then.. Each run was as scary as it gets and I don't think I could handle anymore adrenalin in my system so I called it a day... I was pretty pleased with 33.8 knots though, especially considering I was on old, battered wave kit which wasn't designed to be fast when new and must be slower now that it has several dodgy repairs to it, and was using a sail with a hole in it!!

Now I'm back though I'm wondering if just one more run would have got me over the 34 knots!!
